Ashtavaidyas are esteemed as the traditional physicians of Kerala. They are the masters in eight disciplines of medicine from which the word "Ashtavaidya" is originated. They wrote several books incorporating their observations and clinical experiences. "Chikitsa Manjari", "Yogamritham", "Abhidhana Manjari", "Alathoor Manipravalam", "Sindoora Manjari", "Kairali commentary of Ashtangahridayam" are some of them. They come under the family of Vagbhatacharya, one of the member of Brihat trayee. Brihat trayees are the three authentic acharyas, namely Susrutha, Charaka and Vagbhata.
Founder Thrissur Thaikat Mooss family is one of the reputed Ashtavaidya families practising ayurveda for many decades. The fame of the family shot up at the time of Ashtavaidyan Thrissur Thaikat Unni Mooss. He was very much accepted as physician at the younger age itself. In 1920 he established the ayurvedic manufacturing unit in Kizhakkumpattukara, Thrissur viz., S. N. A. OUSHADHASALA as a memorial of his father Ashtavaidyan Thaikat Narayanan Mooss. Ashtavaidyan Thaikat Narayanan Mooss, was an experienced physician, a poet in his own right and a scholar in Sanskrit. He wrote more than ten books in Sanskrit and text "Sindoora Manjari" in Ayurveda. "Sindoora Manjari" is the book describing the prepartion method and the use of "Sindooras" and "Shuddhi Kramas" of various drugs.
S N A OUSHADHASALA, the founder's ancestral family was in Pazhanellippurath in Malabar region. Pazhanellippurath Thaikat Mooss was the Raja vaidyan of King Samorin of Calicut. The legend is that the Mooss when returned after treating Sakthan Thampuran, was not received by Samorin and he was banished. Then Sakthan Thampuran, the king of Cochin, gave him shelter in Trichur. This concern was established at a time when ayurveda was not so popular in Kerala. At that period ayurvedic medicines are made mostly in houses of vaidyas practising in their tiny abodes.
S N A OUSHADHASALA has the unique opportunity of having the services of several ashtavaidyas viz., Vayaskara Mooss, Kuttencheri Mooss, Pulamanthol Mooss, and Alathiyoor Nambis. It was Kuttencheri Mooss, who had an innovative mind, formulated several special medicines which were found to be very effective. It has more than twenty five formulation in that collection. There were many national leaders who have seeked treatment in this esteemed concern.
