Relax your mind and body
By CHOONG MEK ZHIN

IF you are bored with the usual selection of music and need to find an alternative to relaxing, ayurvedic music therapy may be just the thing for you.

Punarnava Ayurvedic Centre senior physician and flutist Dr C. Radhakrishnan said this therapy was based on the concept that music created vibrations or frequency that was similar to that produced by the chakra within ourselves.

“Our bodies contain energy centres call chakra that emits certain frequencies,” Dr Radhakrishnan said.

He explained that the frequency music produced helped improve chakra energy flow within the body, leading to a more relaxed frame of mind and body.

Even though this traditional relaxation and healing method is a holistic concept with a history spanning back 5,000 years in India, Dr Radhakrishnan still describes it as a growing science.

“There are many different musical repertoires that can be played, each depending on a person's problems and worries,” he said, adding that in general, all ayurvedic musical therapies are meant for overall relaxation.

He said an important component of the music was mohanam (musical sound).

“A 'mohanam' is a combination of a few sounds known as scales. Each 'mohanam' triggers different emotional responses such as happiness,” Dr Radhakrishnan said.

In his musical sessions, Dr Radhakrishnan guides participants through simple breathing exercises followed by passive listening to his flute playing. Lastly, participants will sing descending and ascending tunes according to basic ayurveda music.

Ayurveda Tips
Bath & digestion - Do not have a bath immediately after eating food. There should be a gap of at least 2 hours between intake of food and bath.
Ghee & Honey - Do not take ghee & honey in equal quantity as it leads to indigestion. If indigestion is caused by ghee, drink hot water; whereas if indigestion is caused by honey, drink cold water.
